Sluggers take Rollins tournament title
After suffering through a disappointing 2-7 start to its season,
the Penn State baseball team (8-9) tore up the competition last
week en route to capturing the 51st Rollins Baseball Week Tournament
in Winter Park, Fla.
The Nittany Lions claimed the title with a 19-1 offensive on-slaught
against Pennsylvania (2-4). Shortstop Adam Beers, third baseman
Shawn Fagan and left fielder Michael Campo each collected three
hits for Penn State.
The Nittany Lion pitching staff was nothing less than spectacular.
In his two appearances, senior righty Nate Bump threw 17 innings,
gave up 10 hits and struck out 24 batters. Bump has fanned 38
in his last three games.
Making his first career start, sophomore Peter Yodis led Penn
State to a 13-1 win when he took a no-hitter into the ninth inning
against Miami (Ohio). His bid to become just the ninth Lion in
history to pitch a no-hitter vanished when Red Hawk second basemen
Brady Nori singled.
At the plate Fagan hit everything thrown his way. Through the
first four games in Florida Fagan went 11 for 16 (.688) with four
homeruns and 11 RBIs. Fagan finished the tourney hitting .588,
20 for 34.
