Sluggers drop three games to Virginia

Junior pitcher Greg Arnold lasted just two and two-thirds innings on the mound yesterday giving up seven hits and six earned runs as the Penn State baseball team lost its third game of the weekend to Virginia 8-4.

The Cavaliers scored a run in the second inning and followed that up with five runs in their half of the third inning to force Arnold to exit the game early.

Virginia outfielder Julian Gonzalez capped off the scoring with an RBI single to drive in catcher Josh Bowling. Bowling went 3 for 4 on the afternoon with three RBIs.

In the first half of a doubleheader Saturday, the Lions got seven innings of work and six strikeouts from senior right-hander Nate Bump.

Penn State, however, could not provide enough offensive support for its ace as Virginia went on to a 5-2 victory.

In game two on Saturday the Cavaliers scored three runs in the bottom of the second off freshman pitcher Dan Goebeler and cruised to a 9-2 victory.

The three-game sweep by Virginia ups its record to 5-1 on the young season, while the losses drop Penn State to 1-5.
