New study addresses pollution
A unique program addressing solutions to water pollution and natural
resource management problems will be made possible due to a $1.78
million donation.
The Heinz Endowments of Pittsburgh, a philanthropic organization,
made the donation to create an interdisciplinary center and graduate-level
curriculum in watershed stewardship, according to a news release
from the Department of Public Information.
The program, which will create the Center for Watershed Stewardship,
aims to train students to find solutions to local water pollution
problems, according the release.
"The program will bring together professionals and ideas
from a wide array of disciplines to help Pennsylvania communities
develop long-term to non-point source water pollution and natural
resource management problems," said David DeWalle, a forestry
professor who helped write the proposal for the center, in the
release.
"Thanks to the vision and generosity of the Heinz Endowments,
Penn State will add an important new component to its graduate
education and outreach efforts," University President Graham
Spanier said.
