Heicklen, 4 more charged with marijuana possession
The State College Police Department filed charges Friday at District
Justice Carmine Prestia's office against five people in connection
with Professor Emeritus Julian Heicklen's marijuana protest Thursday,
according to a State College police news release.
Heicklen, 65, State College residents Alan Gordon, 28, and Kenneth
Keltner, 18, and University students Andrew Burke, 19, and Jennifer
Corbett, 18, were all charged with possessing a small amount of
marijuana, according to the release.
Heicklen said he had not been officially notified of the charges
yet. Heicklen said he estimated he would receive his charges in
the mail in the next week.
Heicklen was protesting marijuana laws for the fourth time Thursday
when his "joint" was confiscated.
The preliminary hearing for Heicklen could be as early as March
4, Heicklen said.
If found guilty, the people charged at the protest could face
a maximum of a $500 fine and 30 days in jail.
Corbett (freshman-psychology) said although she has not been notified
by mail yet either, she received a phone call and was told that
she will be charged and receive notification soon.
A crowd, last week's being estimated by State College police at
200 to 250 people, has consistently gathered to watch or join
Heicklen in his protest, which has occurred four out of the past
five weeks.
Heicklen said he will be out again this week to protest at the
University Gates. The University Gates provide more room and cause
less traffic problems, Heicklen said. Whether Heicklen will be
smoking, however, has not been decided.
