Announcements from Shields

Student Aid:

1998-99 application process

1998-99 awarding for continuing and graduate students will occur in June. We ask you complete your 1997 tax returns and then file the 1998-99 FAFSA using actual tax information. Using correct, accurate income information will decrease delays in the application process and will not require verification of your income later.

Use the World Wide Web. We strongly encourage you to file your FAFSA using the Web. There will be less room for error. You will be less likely to have to provide income information to the Office of Student Aid in order to verify your application information. You can access the FAFSA on the Web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Are you thinking about dropping credits?

Students need to be aware that dropping credits, either from full time to part time or from part time to a lesser credit load, may have the following implications on aid they are currently receiving and their aid eligibility in future years.

1. Aid award values may decrease for students who drop below full-time status. All students who are receiving Federal Pell Grants who are dropping credits that either bring them under full-time enrollment or reduce their part-time enrollment will have their award value adjusted down to their current credit load. This may result in a balance due in the account.

2. Satisfactory academic progress may be affected in future years if a student who is taking less than 12 credits does not complete the courses for which they originally registered.

Remember that students are expected to complete the course work that they begin to be eligible for future student aid based on federal and state regulations.

Summer work-study

Students who want to be considered for a Summer Federal Work-Study award, must call the Office of Student Aid at (814) 865-6301 between now and March 16, 1998. Follow the menu prompts to access and complete the Summer Federal Work-Study Application.
