Conklin announces intent to run for Senate
Local businessman Scott Conklin announced yesterday his intent
to seek the Democratic nomination for the 34th district state
Senate seat.
The 34th district includes Centre, Clinton, Mifflin, Juniata and
parts of Perry counties. Conklin seeks to fill the seat held by
retiring state Sen. J. Doyle Corman, R-Centre.
"It's time that we return a voice in government to the people.
I want to be that voice," Conklin said.
Conklin, 39, is a resident of Philipsburg. He is a contractor
and the owner of Scott Conklin Builders Inc. He is also a member
of the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County and a
member of the Clearfield County Vo-Tech Advisory Board.
Creating and maintaining more jobs in the area are some of Conklin's
goals for the district. Conklin said he would like to see increased
educational funding and a return to family values.
This is Conklin's second bid for political office. Two years ago,
Conklin unsuccessfully ran for the 77th district state House seat.
Conklin said he realizes his name may not be easily recognizable
in some areas of the district. He said if he has to, he will knock
on every door in the county.
"My route's going to be with the family and the individuals
in this district," Conklin said.
Centre County Commissioner Chairwoman Vicki Bumbarger Wedler,
Jacob Doyle Corman III and Philipsburg resident Connie Lucas all
have announced they plan to run for the Republican nomination.
Primary elections are May 19.
