Lady spikers sign three top recruits

After a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament, the Penn State women's volleyball team has received letters of intent from three top-notch high school seniors.

Shannon Bortner, Mishka Levy and Amanda Rome announced they will attend Penn State in the fall.

Bortner, a 6-foot setter at Dallastown High School was the 1996 and '97 Pennsylvania Player of the Year.

Levy hails from Stafford, Texas where she attended Episcopal High School. She is a 6-foot-2 middle hitter who was named a second-team all-American by Volleyball Magazine this past season.

Rome is a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Chaska, Minn. She led Chaska High School to three AA Minnesota state championships, and was named a first-team all-American by Volleyball Magazine in 1997.

The Lady Lions will return five starters from the 1997 squad that went 34-2, won the Big Ten championship and fell to Stanford in the championship.
