Ridge releases funding for campus projects

Improvements to facilities at two University locations will be in the works due to a recent release of state funds.

Gov. Tom Ridge released about $3 million in state capital budget funds for projects, according to a University news release. The funds are part of Ridge's $200 million capital funding commitment to the University during the next five years.

Of the money, $1.82 million will be used for renovations to the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory and Incinerator at University Park. Renovations will include more laboratory space and improved biosecurity features, according to the release.

The underground heating system at the Harrisburg Campus of the Capital College will be replaced using $1.14 million in state funds, according to the release.

These projects are in need of renovations to accommodate the communities. The construction on the diagnostic laboratory "will help meet the regional demands for animal diagnostic services," Ridge said in the news release.

The expansion and the recent cooperative agreement with the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System will allow the state to help livestock farmers provide the public with safe, quality products, Ridge said in the release.

And the heating system on the Harrisburg campus has deteriorated beyond repair. The new system will not only serve the current buildings, but will also allow for future expansion including the new library, which is being designed, said William McKinnon, senior associate vice president for finance and business.

"It's an old heating system because the campus (was originally) a military base," he said.
