Long-delayed trial finally underway
Opening arguments gave way to graphic testimony about the 1995 stabbing death of State College resident Ruth Fergus yesterday as the first day of the frequently delayed murder trial of Walter Chruby began.

School board approves new $57 million budget
The State College Area School Board unanimously approved a budget of more than $57 million last night that included funds for a new breakfast program called "Breakfast in a Bag."

Borough council votes to ban loitering
Complaints from business owners about vandalism, graffiti and other criminal activities led the State College Borough Council last night to approve the creation of an ordinance that would prohibit loitering in the State College area.

After experiencing an awful ending to the 1996-97 season with a loss in the first round of the Big Ten tournament and three members of the team leaving the program, the Penn State women's basketball team is determined to make the offseason a success.

Track team produces six All-Americans at NCAAs
The Penn State men's and women's track and field teams had a strong showing two weekends ago at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind., with all six Lion qualifiers earning All-American status.
