Movin' on to HUB band extravaganza With the sumo wrestling, a bungee run, a joust straight out of American Gladiators, the human bowling ball, a trampoline bungee, a funhouse, the Penn State snowboarding team showing off its stunts and Airwalk boards on trampolines, it was easy to overlook the bands on stage. NPHC show steps up About 200 people cheered and supported the stepping and stomping Delta Sigma Theta sorority Inc. and Omega Psi Phi fraternity Inc. as they won the National Pan-Hellenic Council 1997 Step show this weekend in Eisenhower Auditorium. Bird watching yields green for environmentalists While thousands of students participated in the 1997 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon by collecting pledges and donations for the number of hours each dancer danced, there was another type of "thon" in the planning. Only this fund-raiser didn't earn money by the hour -- it was by the species. CATA, Loop fares to increase Centre Line bus fares will likely increase from 85 cents to $1 and Loop rates from 35 to 40 cents by this Fall. Warm weather blooms bar-goers Flowers are blooming, birds singing and bars hopping. With the spring weather, some of the area businesses with outdoor seating see an increase in customers. Penn State Forensics Council wins national championship There is no debating that the Penn State Forensics Council has made a name for itself across the country. More road woes for lady sluggers The Lady Lion softball team's road woes continued this weekend. Penn State lost three games by a total of three runs at Wisconsin. Netmen kept quiet at Big Ten championships The Penn State men's tennis team hoped to make some noise in the Big Ten championships during the weekend at Michigan State, but its voice was silenced by Illinois and Purdue. Laxers survive scare at hands of Blue Hens Penn State men's lacrosse coach Glenn Thiel said Saturday's game against Delaware scared him, even though the Blue Hens were 2-10 and lost eight straight. Linksters roll over field in Rutherford Invitational The Penn State men's golf team taught a lesson in the ways of golf this weekend when it hosted the Rutherford Invitational, but the rest of the field seemed to have skipped class. Seniors DeJuliis, Crowe outstanding in last game at home In their last game at Penn State, seniors Michele DeJuliis and Tam Crowe played on a higher plane than all other competitors Saturday night at Jeffery Field. Lady Laxers one goal short against Terps With just under one and a half minutes remaining, the Penn State women's lacrosse team played with the intensity and urgency that can be expected in a postseason contest when a team has its proverbial back against the wall. Trackman Cook wins second straight decathlon at Penn Relays Last week's 103rd Penn Relays in Philadelphia was a collection of the best college track teams and athletes in the country. Lion quarterbacks: a mixed showing at Blue-White Entering Saturday's Blue-White game, Mike McQueary was Penn State coach Joe Paterno's guy. The starting quarterback position was McQueary's to lose.
