Collegian Editorial
You're invited! The students you represent request your presenceDear Dr. Spanier,
As the students know, you have taken a promising first step with
your letter to the State College Borough Council, encouraging
council members to reconsider the proposed revised housing ordinance
that you believe "singles out students in a discriminatory
fashion" by restricting housing in some areas to no more
than three unrelated persons.
Your letter made University students and council members aware
of your feelings that eliminating that discriminatory language
is a "major step" in the direction to balance the concerns
of students and borough residents.
But the situation still remains troublesome for students and will
not be resolved simply by one letter.
In recognition of this situation and your efforts to aid students
so far, your presence is requested at the upcoming borough council
meeting at 7:30 p.m. April 7.
Although the meeting does conflict with your plans to entertain
out-of-town guests, please entertain the notion of making a powerful
show of support for your students -- even if only for half an
hour -- by attending the meeting and standing up with them in
protest of discriminatory housing rules.
Your interest in students' housing concerns is appreciated, but
your presence before the borough council and student body on April
7 would clearly demonstrate the weight of your letter to the council.
RSVP your acceptance or regrets by sending an E-mail to The Daily
Collegian Board of Opinion at amb184@psu.edu. Please feel free
to bring as many guests as you like.
Sincerely,
You, too, can invite Dr. Spanier to the April 7 meeting by sending
him an E-mail at gspanier@psu.edu, or stop by his office in 201
Old Main to hand him this invitation personally.
