Ballots solicit student input

The five referendum questions will address issues from the freshman seminar to Spanier's duties as University president.

The Undergraduate Student Government is looking for ammunition for its battles for lower student fees, general education reform, legal advice for students, nonalcoholic activities and fair off-campus student housing. And it's hoping to find the answers it needs through referendum questions.

The five referendum questions at the end of the ballot for USG, Association of Residence Hall Students and University Park Allocation Committee elections, reflect USG's desire for student input to bring to the table when bargaining with the administration and the State College Borough Council.

"Most of them are relevant issues in the University right now that we need student input on," said USG Town Senator Brian Heller. "This is an easy way to get 5,000 students' input at once."

The referendum questions on the ballot this year are:

  • A plan has been implemented to provide on-campus students with daily deliveries of the Centre Daily Times and The New York Times to your door for a cost of $15. This cost is being added to your semester housing bill. Are you in favor of the implementation of this plan?

  • Do you think that social issues (i.e. alcohol awareness, safety, etc.) should be incorporated into the freshman seminar course?

  • Do you believe that University money should be budgeted to provide a full-time practicing attorney to deal with issues such as landlord/tenant relations and other legal questions common to many students?

  • Do you support the continued funding of HUB late night activities?

  • Do you believe that the University president's duties should include the representation of student's concerns involving outside government agencies, especially borough council agendas and legislation in the state capital?
