Hoosier pitching leave lady sluggers in dust

Much has been said about Penn State freshman pitcher Jaci Kalp but Indiana has not only one but two freshmen hurlers who the Lady Lions became all too familiar with.

Teresa Martinez and Jessica Creith each pitched complete games on Saturday in 9-3 and 7-1 Hoosier victories. Indiana (19-8) finished the weekend by sweeping the three-game series, edging Penn State 4-3 yesterday.

The Lady Lions (17-11) got two quick runs in the top of the first in game one off Martinez. Indiana tied the game after two innings then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to blow the game open.

Shortstop Monica Armendarez was a hitting machine all weekend against Penn State. Armendarez had three hits, drove in five and scored two.

Designated hitter Meg Montgomery had two hits and two RBIs in game one.

Anje Schwab took the loss for the Lady Lions, giving up five runs in three and two-thirds innings.

Game two saw more great Hoosier pitching. Creith gave up one unearned run and struck out two in seven innings.

Kalp had her worst outing as a Lady Lion, giving up five runs on seven hits.

Yesterday the Lady Lions jumped out to another quick lead on Shannon Salsburg's two-run homer. Armendarez broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single with the in the fourth.
