Current political conditions force Mandela to cancel speech at
Bryce Jordan Center
Winnie Mandela's speech at the University has been canceled.
Mandela, president of the African National Congress Women's League
and former wife of ANC President Nelson Mandela, was originally
scheduled to speak in February. The speech was postponed until
April 9 but has now been canceled, said Karen Wagner, public information
officer at the University.
Mandela's obligations in South Africa require her to stay in the
country until "certain political issues are resolved,"
said a news release from Shana Lourie, publicity chair for the
Programming Coordination Board.
The speech will not be rescheduled before the end of the academic
year, Wagner said. She did not know if it would be rescheduled
for another time.
The speech was supposed to take place in The Bryce Jordan Center
as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series.
