Local pubs anticipate holiday party problems

The traditionally large number of students drinking and partying on St. Patrick's Day have prompted area clubs and police to increase security, but few problems are expected today.

"We keep a larger staff than any other bar in town and are able to keep an eye on people," said Dave Greenleaf, manager of Player's Sports Bar, 112 W. College Ave. "I'm a little worried about having drunk people show up at our door."

"This year we're anticipating that we're going to have a pretty busy evening," Sgt. John Wilson of the State College Police Department said. The effects of St. Patrick's Day depend on what day of the week the holiday falls on, and how it coincides with spring break, Wilson said.

"We try to base manpower based on what we expect as activity," Wilson said. "Normally speaking, we do increase patrols anyway."

In past years, Wilson said the borough police have seen problems such as parties and fights, but the police have not had any situation get out of control.

"We've certainly been able to maintain control," he said.
