After about a half-hour of marveling at the light show, gawking at the tortuous pitter-patter, and shuddering at the haphazard, unexpected booms, it gets a little tedious, and you're ready for the clouds to blow onward and leave you alone to return to sunshine. Lady Lion seniors' careers end with loss When Penn State and Ohio State faced off in the first round of the tournament Friday, seniors on both teams had high expectations. Lady Luck finally shines on cagers in win Ohio State point guard Damon Stringer was supposed to be the senior day spoiler. Like so many other players who have pulled out last-second, game-winning shots at the Bryce Jordan Center, Stringer was supposed to nail a 3-pointer and put away the Nittany Lions for the 14th time in the Big Ten this season. Carlton can't play savior role for Lions Rahsaan Carlton entered his final home game Saturday against Ohio State averaging just 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds. With those mediocre numbers, he -- and the entire team for that matter -- has failed to live up to the early-season hopes and predictions. Icers finish season with flurry in Michigan The No. 4 Icers (24-8, 23-5 ACHA) soundly defeated the Wolverines on Friday night, 13-0, and Saturday afternoon, 14-3. Icers pick up momentum with wins The valley was indeed happy Saturday night for the Icers. Due to the two blowout wins over Michigan, Penn State will be riding a huge wave of momentum to nationals. Gymmen knock off New Meixco in finale In a meet that started out close, the No. 4 men's gymnastics team defeated No. 7 New Mexico, 228.975-224.675. Lady Lion gymnasts vault through record breaking weekend In the back of his mind, Lady Lion coach Steve Shephard knew his team had what it took to put up high numbers in the all-around. The talent was there, both at the upperclassmen and underclassmen level.x Senior gymwomen shine in last meet With her average score 9.95 this weekend, Lady Lion gymnast Nicole Malinak broke the school record of 9.9 shared by Rene Lyst and Tracy Kerner. Spikers win Hall of Fame Classic The No. 2 Nittany Lions earned their second straight Hall of Fame Classic title by defeating No. 6 Ball State, 15-11, 4-15, 15-9, 15-17, 16-14 on Friday and the Puerto Rican National team, 15-5, 15-1, 15-7, on Saturday. Spiker Kepner lingers in shadow of teammates After receiving MVP honors at the Hall Of Fame Classic here during the weekend, Penn State's Jason Kepner barely had time to enjoy the accolade before children from the crowd surrounded him in the hopes of getting his autograph. Boxers show no guts, glory in Invitational After the Nittany Lion Invitational on Saturday at White Building, Penn State boxing coach Bill Wrable used some choice phrases to describe his team's performance -- phrases that stung worse than the blows the Lions received in losing six-of-seven matches. Laxers lose to Notre Dame The NCAA tournament selection committee has not been kind to the Penn State men's lacrosse team in the past. With hopes of finally swaying the committee, the Nittany Lions' 1997 schedule was improved -- with 10-of-12 opponents ranked in the preseason top 30. Gritty defense key in win for Fighting Irish For the first half of the men's lacrosse game against No. 14 Notre Dame on Friday, it looked as if the No. 16 Nittany Lions would be able to leave Holuba Hall with a hard-fought victory. But the Notre Dame defense took a gut check during halftime and came out for the third quarter with a new determination. ----------------------------OPINION---------------------------- Collegian Editorial Citizens shouldn't be the only enforcers of tougher tobacco laws.
