Despite Buckeye loss, gymwomen still confidentBy CRAIG YETSKOCollegian Sports Writer
If the Penn State women's gymnastics team goes on to win its next
few meets and make a major statement in the Big Ten and regional
tournament, it may point to its meet against Ohio State as a turning
point.
Although the Lady Lions did not beat the Buckeyes (193.750-193.125)
on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, they consistently hit their routines
on every event. In her only event of the evening, sophomore Missy
Leopoldus finished in a three-way tie for first place on bars
(9.85) with fellow sophomore Ellen Casey and Ohio State's Susan
Eckman.
Penn State also began to show the confidence and determination
on beam, an event it put a heavy emphasis on last week. Senior
Nicole Malinak finished tied for first with Ohio State's Catherine
McGhee with a 9.75. Senior Bea Selz started the event for the
Lady Lions and recorded a 9.45. Freshman Ashley Wilson hit her
routine and registered a 9.675. Sophomore Janae Whittaker received
a 9.7.
Lady Lion coach Steve Shephard said the team did very well during
the meet, despite having only five gymnasts on floor and vault.
"We stayed right with them," he said. "We hit beam
so we were very happy with that."
Saturday's meet also saw the return of freshman Nikki Smith. She
hit her beam routine, receiving a 9.725. Smith, who also performed
a solid routine on bars, was happy to contribute after a lengthy
absence.
"I was so glad competing again. I had a fun time," she
said. "I felt like I did really well after being out for
three weeks."
The consistency in each event was a sign the Lady Lions may have
hit their stride just in time for the end of the season. Smith
said it was better to rest Leopoldus now and have her in peak
shape for the rest of the season.
Shephard pointed to the team's work ethic as a factor for its
consistency on each event. He said his squad stayed late and put
in the numbers on their routines.
"I think we worked even harder in the gym last week,"
Casey said.
"I think everyone is motivated to work that hard every week
in the gym."
Although the Lady Lions did not have Leopoldus on floor and vault,
the Lady Lions persevered and put up a fight before a tough Big
Ten opponent and an unfriendly St. John Arena crowd.
"I think they were pleased with themselves," Shephard
said. "I think they realize they can compete and do well."
