ARHS meets behind closed doors
Editor's note: Last night, the Association of Residence Hall Students
discussed the possibility of residence computer consultants being
moved into all dorms without student input. The Daily Collegian
considers this issue to be of some importance to University students,
as it may result in students paying more money to the University.
But ARHS President Jolaine Gravish closed the meeting to The
Daily Collegian.
ARHS members are elected by students to represent students. The
Collegian editors believe that informing students about the activities
of their elected representatives is an important function of a
newspaper and an important part of the governmental process.
ARHS Vice President Larry Paseornek said he thinks ARHS members
closed the meeting because "this is a younger council. We're
building a strong council. It's not going to be good for our organization
(to discuss the issue publicly)."
Another elected student leader, Undergraduate Student Government
Senate President Mark Sosnowsky, said that he would never close
a general Senate meeting. "We're elected representatives
and we're ultimately answerable to (constituents). They should
have a right to go and find out what we're doing."
The Collegian believes that ARHS, by closing its meeting unnecessarily,
impeded the student-government process and deprived students of
a discussion about an issue.
The blank space below is devoted to the article that would have
been written to inform you, the University student, about this
issue, had ARHS not closed its meeting. |
