Senate Briefs

The Undergraduate Student Government welcomed an eighth new face to the USG Senate floor Tuesday night with the appointment of Ryan Broadwater.

The Pollock/Nittany Residence Hall Association approved Broadwater (sophomore-political science), who was a PNRHA council member, as a Pollock/Nittany senator. He is replacing one of the two Pollock/Nittany senators who resigned this semester.

"I think because of the fact that he was a part of Pollock-Nittany Residence Association, he knows the pulse of the students here," said PNRHA President Brian Youngblood. "Rashid (Njai, former Pollock/Nittany senator) and Lesley (Nurse, former Pollock/Nittany senator) did a really good job. It was sad to lose them."

Broadwater may find himself right at home on the Administrative Contact Committee, which is currently addressing general education reform. The overall curriculum and general education are two areas Broadwater said he would like to address on the senate.

"I'm really concerned with the curriculum," he said "I personally would like to see them cut back some of the requirements."

Based on his own first-year experience, he plans to work to improve the integration of freshmen, transfer and Commonwealth Campus students into the University Park campus.

"The size of Penn State added to (the transition from high school to college) . . . makes starting here difficult," Broadwater said.

Two town senate positions and one Pollock/Nittany senate position remain open.
