Gymmen hang on to defeat Michigan State


The No. 7 Penn State men's gymnastics team beat Michigan State, 226.95-225.130, Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. After a slow start the Nittany Lions recovered with a strong showing on rings and vault to gain the victory.

Penn State coach Randy Jepson said the team was very competitive. Freshman Mike Dutka won the all-around with a 56.85, the highest score by any Penn State gymnast this season.

Joe Roemer finished second in the all-around with a 55.7. Roemer posted career marks in vault (9.55) and pommel horse (9.70). Junior Roy Malka finished behind Roemer with a 55.65.

The next home meet for the Lions will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Rec Hall, as the team faces No. 6 Illinois.


Netmen represented well in Princeton, N.J.


Michael Carter, senior captain of the Penn State men's tennis team, reached the semifinals of the championship draw at the Princeton Indoor Tennis Invitational last weekend.

Carter reached the semifinals with a straight set win (6-2, 6-4) over Texas Christian's Ashley Fisher, but lost to Tom Blake of Harvard.

Sophomore Michael Griesser rallied after a first round loss to beat Mike Passarella of Harvard 6-2, 7-6. in the consolation match.

The Lions will return home to host the Penn State Classic on Feb. 15.
