Kalup wrote a column in The Daily Collegian last semester about being denied the ability to donate blood for the American Red Cross because he is gay, many issues beside alleged discrimination in the donor screening process came into the spotlight. Same-sex couples shunned by home zoning ordinance With the proposal of a new student home zoning ordinance under fire from members of the Undergraduate Student Government, the question of how the ordinance will affect same-sex couples has arisen. Police log ----------------------------SPORTS---------------------------- Fencers dominate Fighting Irish Penn State and Notre Dame waged war on the football field for many years. It became an intense rivalry between the two schools that eventually came to an end after the 1992 season. The rivalry has resumed on the fencing strip. Pigskin Classic out for Lions The Nittany Lions won't be using an early game to springboard themselves into the season as they did during the 1996 season with the Kickoff Classic. Speculation had linked Penn State to the Aug. 23 Pigskin Classic, with Notre Dame possibly the opponent. Up and down cagers The Penn State men's basketball team, with very little depth or experience, has found itself at a marked disadvantage in many games this season even before the opening tip-off. Spikers pull trigger on UCLA It's funny how volleyball works out that way. Lady cagers answer questions with win Penn State coach Rene Portland knew all along what her team was missing. Fired up gymmen get help from old friend With the support of 10-time Olympic medal winning gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, a fired up and focused Nittany Lion gymnastics team swept Syracuse Saturday night at Rec Hall. PSU-Notre Dame rivalry alive and well While Penn State's football rivalry with Notre Dame doesn't rival those of Pitt (92 games), Syracuse (68) or West Virginia (59), quite a bit of interest grew in the games between the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish. Despite occasional snags, Coyne continues to produce Friday night was an exception for Icer defenseman Don Coyne. He didn't have any points in Penn State's 11-2 win over Buffalo in the Icers' first game of the Nittany Lion Invitational Tournament. Barnes rewarded for jack of all trades efforts For Icer forward Andrew Barnes, this weekend's Nittany Lion Invitational turned out to be very special. Icers win Nittany Lion Invitational Blue and white banners hanging from the ice pavilion rafters show the dominance the Penn State ice hockey team has in its own Nittany Lion Invitational Tournament. Going into this past weekend, the Icers won 11 out of 15 Invitational Tournaments, including the last four in a row. Netwomen nearly pull upset The score may say Wisconsin 4, Penn State 3, but beyond a shadow of a doubt, this was a huge victory for those wearing the blue and white. Garner spins tangled spider web against Burns, Golden Gophers Minnesota Golden Gopher guard Kiauna Burns is a pretty humble basketball player. She's lucky she is, because an egotistical player would not have taken kindly to having a shot blocked by a spider. A spider who goes by the name Andrea Garner. Fencer Lidow remains undefeated If the first 25 days of 1997 are any indication, this could be an amazing year for Penn State sophomore fencer David Lidow. Stephens lands new role It should be obvious to Nittany Lion fans that somebody other than guard Pete Lisicky needs to step up if this team is going to win. Spiker Pollock settles down Before Thursday night's match against No. 2 UCLA, No. 5 Penn State had a question to answer. Nittany Lion basketball: 'They are just not as good this year' The Blue Band blared away while those in attendance danced, clapped and cheered. The Nittany Lion bolted around the floor and muffled his ears. Little kids wore blue-and-white faces. Big kids did, too. Cheerleaders cheered. Vendors sold food. The announcer announced. The front-row fans made their list of curses to spit at Bobby Knight. ----------------------------OPINION---------------------------- Collegian Editorial The Red Cross needs to re-evaluate blood donor screening questions.
