----------------------------NEWS---------------------------- Ridge's gain is students' loss With the passage of a $16.4 billion state spending plan, the University will only receive a 1.6 percent increase in its state appropriation -- which could mean a larger than usual increase in tuition, meager salary increases for faculty and staff and continually overcrowded classrooms. Spanier 'disappointed' by inadequate funding The following is a statement University President Graham Spanier made Friday in response to the passage of the 1996-97 state budget. Gov. Tom Ridge signed the budget Saturday morning. The budget does not provide an increase for instructional programs and services, but does provide a $4.3 million increase for agricultural research and extension.
