Every year since 1942 and 1927, respectively, these two teams have played dual roles as both the Lions' oldest rivals and Lions' yearly whipping boys. This weekend proved times never change. Bumpy start over for sluggers Before the baseball team's doubleheader with Indiana yesterday, Lion assistant coach Tom Calliari took second baseman Adam Beers aside for some advice that he thought might help the struggling sophomore. Boxing club lands three into nationals The Penn State Boxing Club performed fairly well at the Northeast Regional Boxing Championships, winning three out of four title fights, but was outgunned by Lock Haven University, which crowned four champs Saturday night at the White Building. Seniors' flat play dictates Lady Lion loss There had been talk about the seniors -- that their performances would dictate the direction of any Lady Lion basketball game. Netmen double up Indiana Penn State men's tennis coach Jan Bortner has been preaching it all season long. He has been drilling into his players' heads the importance of winning the doubles point. Weekend rougher for Spikers 'sin' Contreras Penn State coach Mark Pavlik began to show the strain and anxiety of a coach after an emotional and nerve-wracking contest. However, he was still able to crack a smile, a sign of his appreciation for his team's performance. Weekend rougher for Spikers 'sin' Contreras Despite having one of its best players out of the lineup, the Penn State men's volleyball team continued to roll. Lady sluggers turn away St. Peter's in action-packed two-game sweep The tough competition wasn't at Holuba Hall on Saturday, but St. Peter's (6-10) was, and that suited the Penn State softball team (15-8) just fine as the Lady Lions added two notches to the win column. Gymwomen's best falls short After an uninspired first rotation and a fall on the first routine of the second event, it looked like it would be a long night for the women's gymnastics team. It wasn't. Seven heaven With only seven gymnasts able to compete for Michigan Saturday night, it seemed like the wounded Wolverines might have had some trouble. Lady laxers spread scoring, win pair The scale balanced at last this weekend as the Lady Lion lacrosse team (3-2) swept its weekend series with William & Mary and Virginia -- featuring the exit of the one-woman scoring show starring Michele DeJuliis in favor of all-out team play. Lady laxers spread scoring, win pair Last week, Lady Lion lacrosse coach Julie Williams emphasized the need for a balanced offensive attack -- in other words, she didn't want to see junior attack Michelle DeJuliis taking all the shots. Netwomen 'almost' knock off Hoosiers They came close, but unfortunately for the Lady Lions, the game wasn't horseshoes or hand grenades. Netmen double up Indiana Penn State men's tennis coach Jan Bortner has been preaching it all season long. He has been drilling into his players' heads the importance of winning the doubles point.
