Fencers foil opponents in Chicago The collective goal of the Penn State fencing team this season is to win a second straight NCAA title. Individually, however, team members often harbor their own goals to make a variety of national teams for events such as the World University Games, Pan American Games and even the Olympics. In order to try and make these teams they compete in a series of tournaments collectively called the North American Cup (NAC). The points gained by the competitors at these tournaments help them in their quest to make those teams. Academic ineligibility ends fencer's season When freshman fencer Carina Winter arrived in State College last fall it was a win-win situation for herself and the Lion fencing team. She would receive the opportunity to fence for the defending NCAA champions and help them defend their title and the Lions would receive the services of one of the best junior women's epee fencers in the nation. However it was a situation that would change with the start of the new semester. Conference elite battle tonight In the realm of Big Ten women's basketball, the Purdue-Penn State matchup is at the height of it all. Men's volleyball conspicuously absent from Big Ten On Saturday, the Penn State men's volleyball team will face Ohio State in the season opener for both teams. Even though the two schools have developed a border rivalry since Penn State joined the Big Ten Conference, and the distinctive logo of the conference will be emblazoned on the floor of Rec Hall, the game is not a conference game.
