I'm coming home and I need directions. I want to get to the American Legion Hall, site of the all-ages show that night. It's at these loose gigs, memorizing Ian MacKaye's every move even when he wasn't screaming, digging into Xeroxed 'zines and stacks of seven-inches in cardboard boxes, that I found my teenage roots and a surrogate home. Finding the exact locations of shows has always been spotty, and the directions I get from the promoter are no exception. Given only a skimpy subway stop, I realize that's all I really needed. As just another white kid, I easily blend in and follow the familiar signs.
