Extraordinary class
Last weekend at the NCAA wrestling championships in Iowa City, Iowa, I was fortunate to witness Penn State's great champion, Kerry McCoy, demonstrating something you don't see every day: extraordinary class. I was among the Hawkeye throng who cheered Justin Greenlee from Northern Iowa (an Iowa native son) when he shocked the wrestling world and beat McCoy, even though it was on what some people considered to be an "iffy" takedown. McCoy didn't complain. Though he appeared to take the loss hard, he got up after a few moments and, as he does every time I've seen him compete, congratulated his opponent as well as the opposing coach. The next night, after our great champion, Lincoln McIlravy, also suffered a shocking loss, McCoy took time to just "be with him," the newspapers reportd, because McCoy understood how McIlravy was feeling. Serving as a counterpoint, Oklahoma State's J.J. McGrew edged Iowa's Joel Sharratt for the 190-pound championship, but was roundly booed for repeatedly utilizing every questionable stalling tactic in the book to win. McGrew has used those tactics in the past along with slapping and poking his opponent in the eye. McCoy was one of the several favorites (including three Hawkeyes) to lose his expected first-place trophy. McGrew, a No. 3 seed, won. But McCoy is the true champion. Penn State University should be proud of this young man. And I'm awfully glad we get another year to watch him compete.
