Helmet to headline ARHS Movin' On
By DAVID SCHNEIDERMAN
Industrial darlings Helmet will headline the Association of Residence Hall Students' Movin' On festival on the HUB lawn Saturday April 22.
While problems securing the roster of bands have plagued both Movin' On and the 21st Annual Beta Sigma Beta Sy Barash Regatta, Movin' On Director Mark Shulman is pleased with how things turned out.
"Considering where we were two weeks ago . . . we're very happy," Shulman said. "There's a big void in the University with alternative acts."
Movin' On is able to bring some of the medium-size college acts to Penn State, while the University Concert Committee is able to bring larger acts, Shulman said.
Other bands slated to appear are The Dirges, A.M. Prophecy, The Other Half, Black 47, The Bogmen and two other acts.
One of the other groups was determined at a Battle of the Bands last night at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave. The competing groups were local groups Requiem, The Meanwhiles, Absence of L and Vineyard Pilgrim. The winner was awarded a slot at Movin' On.
Movin' On does not pay the local bands who play at the festival so money can be diverted to the larger act, Shulman said. Local acts are decided based on their popularity and draw in State College, he said.
"We get the biggest local bands that will play with us," Shulman said.
Jay Williams, assistant manager of Blue Train Compact Disc, 418 E. College Ave., is happy with the choice of a headliner.
"That's great . . . at least a little more in step with things than Eddie Money," Williams said, referring to the musical act at the regatta.
Movin' On will also be giving away free T-shirts and compact discs as well as offering non-musical entertainment -- such as Velcro walls.
The event will run from noon to 10 p.m.
