Ramblings on the Sportsworld

Is there anything better than sitting in the bleachers on a warm spring afternoon watching baseball? It was a bit cold when the Lion baseball team took on Ohio State at Beaver Field this weekend, and they don't sell beer at the concession stand, but it is definitely still worth the price of admission -- which is free.

The baseball and softball teams are 100 percent guaranteed not to get bogged down by revenue sharing, salary caps or NLRB injunctions (whatever that means). The Lions will take on St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Beaver Field and the Lady Lions will face Akron at 3 p.m. the same day at Lady Lion Field.

. . . But in Donald Fehr's world of revenue sharing and NLRB injunctions (we still don't know what they are), the replacement players are getting ready to start the regular season. Not only are we going to be entertained by these scabs, replacement umpires are going to be in on the fun as well. But is this a baseball fan's nightmare or a little break from reality?

After all, didn't we all get tired of over-payed, cocky, self-centered players who don't care about the fans at all? At least the replacements give a blue-collar image to the game, something that hasn't been seen for a long time. And they identify with the fans because they are baseball fans. Give replacement players a chance.

. . . The most exciting Penn State game last weekend was the men's tennis team's match against Indiana. The Lions beat the Hoosiers in a 4-3 thriller. It started with a tiebreaker in the doubles matches and ended with the entire meet resting on freshman Dale Cathell's youthful shoulders. With each team standing on the adjacent court and cheering their teammate on, Cathell won in a three-set struggle, which gave Penn State the victory. With a Big Ten win on the line, the Lions came through and put on a great show in the process.

. . . The men's lacrosse team has been the best spring team, and senior attackman Erik Merkel has been its best player. In only seven games, he has scored 28 goals to lead the Lions. At his current pace, Merkel will finish the season with 52 goals and break the season record of 49 set by Bill Hess during the 1957 season.

. . . Does Arkansas qualify as a team of destiny yet? The Razorbacks could have lost three games -- if Texas Southern and Memphis had hit their free throws or if swingman Lawrence Moten knew how many timeouts Syracuse had left.

None of those things happened. The Hogs easily beat Virginia and are now one of the chosen few with NCAA title hopes still alive. They have proven they know how to win the close ones, an invaluable skill in the Final Four.

. . . And how about those Virginia teams? The two Cavalier squads came oh-so-close to Final Four berths. The men's and women's teams fell eight and five points short, respectively, of huge upsets behind the leadership of Junior Burrough and Wendy Palmer. Watch out next year.

. . . This is some advice for the Philadelphia Eagles. DO NOT LET Herschel Walker go. This would be a major boo-boo. Over the years, Philly's sports teams have made some pretty bad transactions (the Phillies swapping five guys for Von Hayes comes immediately to mind), but they can't let Walker go. He is the epitome of a team player. This guy can play fullback, tight end, special teams, and he could probably play middle linebacker. When a team is rebuilding, it needs to keep a veteran like Walker.

. . . On the topic of Philly trades, the Flyers' trade for Montreal's John LeClair has given the team the spark it needed to finally return to playoff contention after a five-year hiatus. Since being traded to the team and being placed on a line with superstar Eric Lindros and second-year phenom Mikael Renberg, the team has assembled one of the top scoring threats in the league -- The Legion of Doom. This is the line that could quite easily take the Flyers to the Stanley Cup.

. . . This weekend marks the debut of Lawrence 'I need publicity after my football career' Taylor in the World Wrestling Federation. With the likes of Ivan 'Polish Power' Putski, the Road Warriors and Barry O, this is making a travesty of the proud, storied tradition of professional wrestling. Other wrestling leagues have had so-called 'athletes' in their matches -- like football players Bill Fralic and the Fridge -- only to get poor results. Pure and simple, it's a mockery. They shouldn't mess with the sport.
