Able candidates

Campus politics is running amok as the campaign for Undergraduate Student Government president, vice president and senator positions is coming to the final stretch.

Until recently we saw very little about the campaigns except for some debate articles and those "crafty" campaign posters that are lining the walls on and off campus. The USG presidency seems to be a battle of whoever will get the sparse number of votes that will probably be cast on Wednesday.

Both the Josh Bokee/Kerith Strano and Corey O'Brien/Kara Annechini platforms contain good ideas, and both campaigns have put much time and effort into their endeavors. But why should we take the time to check the ballots, just so a couple of people can boost their egos and resumes for 12 months?

But despite the naysayers who make these claims that the election is just that, there are people who care about serving students' needs and concerns and addressing the issues that affect all students, and that ticket is the Bokee/Strano ticket.

It's a simple concept -- give the students what they are asking for, and along the way tackle the high-profile issues. Maybe Free Loops and alternative programs for the weekend pale in comparison to the grandiose themes of more practitioners for University Health Services and advising contracts for students' advisers, but when students in East Halls say they want choices to going downtown or to the fraternity districts on weekend nights, Bokee and Strano have listened. When there are many programs for sexual assault victims, but students aren't aware of those programs, Bokee and Strano have added up. Their platform contains issues that can be implemented with little cost to the University.

Bokee and Strano know their issues, such as state budget request shortfalls and borough housing issues that the USG executives will be called on to represent students. And when those issues rear their ugly heads, Bokee and Strano will listen, evaluate and represent the student body to the best of their abilities.
