Money to shake up Sy Barash Regatta
Beta Sigma Beta's annual philanthropy will occur April 23 near Beaver Stadium

CORRECTION:: The correct price for the 21st Annual Beta Sigma Beta Sy Barash Regatta is $6 per ticket.

Rusted Root has been sent on their way, and Eddie Money is coming home tonight.

Money will headline the 21st Annual Beta Sigma Beta Sy Barash Regatta on April 23. The show will take place in the parking lots east of Porter Road, near Beaver Stadium. The event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, was kicked off last night with a reception at Beta Sigma Beta fraternity, 255 E. Fairmount Ave. Delta Gamma sorority, 10 Shulze, is co-sponsoring the event. The event is in memory of Sy Barash -- a founder of the regatta who lost his life to cancer in 1975.

Keynote speaker Kenny Jackson addressed the crowd with a lecture concerning the value of tradition and the Penn State family. Jackson is the wide receivers coach for the Nittany Lion football team and former wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles.

He spoke about his experiences with teammate Randall Cunningham, who lost both of his parents to cancer. In the end, he admonished everyone to support the regatta.

"Don't forget what Penn State is about," he said.

Marian U. Coppersmith Fredman, a member of the University Board of Trustees and widow of Sy Barash, presented the philanthropy with a personal check for $2,000 as well as donations she had collected which totaled an additional $2,440.

Stewart Nurick, one of the co-chairs of the event, said he hopes that Eddie Money will live up to the philanthropy's expectations.

"We hope to do as well as REO Speedwagon," Nurick said in reference to the 1991 festival in which the philanthropy raised more than $60,000.

Regatta Co-Chair Jordan Rutberg introduced the band announcement part of the reception. He joked that the only available bands were Great White and Firehouse. No one laughed -- until he assured the audience that he was joking.

Nurick said that the announcement of a musical act came so late in the semester because they were waiting on Bob Dylan and Rusted Root.

"A lot of bands aren't touring during that time period," he said, adding that "bands will accept and then decline."

Money has had many memorable hits throughout his career including, "Take Me Home Tonight," "Baby Hold On" and "Shakin'."

Tickets will go on sale approximately two weeks before the event and will cost $7. Beta Sigma Beta fraternity, Delta Gamma sorority and local Uni-Marts will sell the tickets.
