Feeling the team wasn't having enough fun, Coach Julie Williams said she tried to get the No. 5 women's lacrosse team (0-3) to adjust its priorities this week.
She will see if she's been successful when the team travels to Virginia for two 1 p.m. showdowns. Penn State meets No. 3 Virginia (1-2) tomorrow in Charlottesville before meeting No. 6 William and Mary (3-0) on Sunday in Williamsburg.
"The one thing we have to get back to is enjoying the game," she said.
Standing in the way are the Cavaliers, who won a 14-6 contest against Old Dominion -- a team that defeated Penn State on March 9. Virginia, which lost three of its four leading scorers to graduation, lost to both No. 1 teams, Princeton and Maryland.
"I know that my team will be prepared for a good Penn State team," Virginia Coach Jane Miller said.
William and Mary's victories have come against non-ranked teams. Coach Feffie Barnhill said her team is balanced offensively and defensively.
"The seniors here are real eager to make this a perfect season," she said.
. . . The men's outdoor track team will kick off the outdoor season by hosting the Jim Thorpe Invitational starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the outdoor track. The meet is a non-scoring event with open athletes competing.
Antonio Davis returns to the team for his final outdoor season after sitting out the indoor season. The senior missed most of last season after breaking his foot at this meet last year. Davis finished first in the triple jump at the Florida State Relays last weekend with a jump of 52 feet.
Junior high jumper Dave Kriz closed the indoor season by finishing second at the IC4A championships with a jump of 6-11.
"The whole objective is to get your outdoor season started," Coach Harry Groves said.
. . . The softball team (10-7) opens its 1995 Big Ten season when it faces the Hoosiers in doubleheaders at 1 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday in Indiana. The Hoosiers (8-10) won the Big Ten crown last year.
Indiana is still a formidable opponent. The top Hoosier batter from a year ago, Michelle Venturella, is back and leads the team with a .415 average, two home runs and 16 RBIs. In addition, four other Indiana players are hitting .300 or better.
Penn State has four batters at or above .300 as well. And three of the Lady Lion pitchers, freshman Jen Hippo (0.76), junior Gypsy Gooding (2.10) and junior Heidi Hanna (2.37) have ERAs under three.
"Every Big Ten game you play is tough," Coach Sue Rankin said. "Indiana is a great offensive team . . . But we have more depth than we had last year in terms of pitching and defensive players. It should be a great series."
. . . The women's tennis team hits the road this weekend to try to capture its first Big Ten win of the season. The Lady Lions (1-2, 0-2 Big Ten) will play back-to-back 10 a.m. matches with Michigan (7-5, 3-1) tomorrow and Michigan State (4-6, 0-2) on Sunday.
The Lady Lions were defeated by Purdue last weekend. Sophomore Olga Novikova and junior Tricia Lehman took the only two wins of the competition.
Coach Sue Whiteside said although her team was disappointed by its loss to the Boilermakers, which it had never lost to before, it has definitely rebounded this week.
"They are not hanging their heads," she said. "We've had some great practices (this week)."
Whiteside added the Lady Lions have never won against the Wolverines, and she expects competition to be tough.
"If we lose on Saturday, we can't let that get us down," she said. "We have to get right back out there on Sunday and come back (for Michigan State)."
. . . The women's outdoor track team opens its season today and tomorrow at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State.
The indoor schedule, which finished March 11 with an NCAA performance by sophomore distance runner Erin St. John, resulted in 10th-place finishes by the Lady Lions in both the Big Ten and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
The strengths of the indoor team included jumping and distance events, which should continue to be assets in the outdoor season. In addition, the spring squad will be helped by thrower Becky Gusic. The sophomore was runner-up in the javelin at the outdoor conference championships last season and placed third at the U.S. Junior Nationals last summer.
Coach Teri Jordan said she is especially looking forward to the 200-team relay meet this weekend.
"We're going south for a little bit of warm weather, to open up and see where we're at," she said. "It should be a good start for the season."
