Long road ahead

Political hatred toward women must be overcome

March is Women's History Month, and it comes at a time when women across the nation are trying to combat negative images of teenage pregnancies and women on welfare. Such issues have become so prevalent recently that the Village Voice termed it "The Season of the Bitch."

Despite Because women technically are not a minority, but rather make up more than half the world's population, they therefore have stronger cohesion and a louder voice than other underrepresented groups.

It is through that united front that they have made such strides as reforming the Pennsylvania rape law and increased sexual assault and harassment awareness.

Both women and men must continue to fight for the equality of women. Everyone must be enlightened enough to realize that women are just as capable as men. Until we reach that point, we need to learn how to stop the differential treatment toward women.

We should be working toward that goal throughout the year, not just in March. Choosing one month to focus on women does nothing to keep the problems in all our minds all year.

Women have come a long way, but there is still a long road ahead. Join the fight for women's rights -- take advantage of upcoming activities such as the Women's March on Washington, D.C. on April 9 or the Take Back the Night march on April 20.
