Chief Angela Pomponio plans to graduate in August 1995. Jenn Hallis a former Collegian staff member who ran for editor in chief for the 1994-95 school year. |
The Board of Directors of Collegian Inc. selected Courtney Cairns for the position of editor in chief that will be vacated by Angela Pomponio when she graduates in May.
Cairns (junior-journalism) said she was nervous before and after the interview conducted by nine members of the board, but she "felt really comfortable with the board members."
She has a positive outlook toward the future and thinks that next year is going to be a great year.
Pomponio said, "Corey has always been a very dedicated person at the Collegian."
She said Cairns has many good ideas about the future of the Collegian and about the use of technology at the Collegian.
Cairns has served the Collegian as a campus candidate, education beat reporter, administration beat reporter, copy/wire editor, opinion editor and as the campus editor for the last two semesters.
Jason Cherkis, a Collegian arts writer, said, "I've seen Corey come in here as a nervous candidate and develop into a tough reporter and now a confident leader."
General Manager Gerry Hamilton said he could not comment specifically on what was said in the closed meeting, but that Cairns was chosen because "she was the best candidate."
Managing Editor Julie Nash said that since Cairns has been a candidate she has put a lot of energy and time into the Collegian.
"She showed dedication that far surpasses most people in the organization," Nash said.
Both Collegian metro editors agreed with the decision to choose Cairns.
"I think the Collegian is in good hands," said Stephanie G. Rosenfeld, assistant metro editor.
Nicole Radzievich, metro editor, said Cairns is dedicated to her work.
Former Collegian staff member Jenn Hall (senior-journalism) said, "Corey is going to repair all the damage that Pomponio has done over the last year."
The other candidates for the position included Hal D. Coffey (junior-political science and journalism), current copy/wire editor; Melanie Cox (junior-journalism), the Collegian's opinion editor; and Heidi Shubilla (junior-political science and journalism), a Collegian news editor.
Cairns said she hopes that in the next year the Collegian will be able to move toward becoming an even better newspaper.
"We have the technology and the talent," she said.
