Letter to the Editor
Defending the big men of the Big Ten
| ||||
| CORRECTION:: The letter published incorrectly stated a sentence about Michael Joseph, the correct statement is "We would rather see Joseph play aggressive and tough defense rather than allow the big men of the Big Ten to score easy buckets." The letter incorrectly identified the authors' years and majors. The correct years and majors are Dave Bogats, sophomore-education and James Kievit, freshman-division of undergraduate studies. |
In response to Ryan Jones' My Opinion column in the March 14 paper, we have to disagree with his remark that Michael Joseph's numbers speak for themselves. First of all, Joseph's role as a back-up was to give John Amaechi a well-deserved rest. Joseph was not asked nor expected to come off the bench and light up the scoreboard. Instead, he was expected to play solid and keep the Cagers in the game during Amaechi's few minutes on the bench. He performed this role tremendously well. Furthermore, the fact that he had two fewer fouls than points scored is meaningless. We would rather allow the big men of the Big Ten to score easy buckets. Besides, isn't it true that most big men struggle from the foul line? If this is true, then Joseph actually made his opponents earn their baskets, imagine that Mr. Jones.
Instead of being criticized Joseph should be commended on his performance for giving his all each time that he took the court. Also, Jones seemed to forget that Joseph battled back and knee problems. So it may not mean as much coming from us, but Michael we appreciated your play and wish you the best of luck. Unfortunately, once again an otherwise fine article was blemished by a writer trying to make a snide comment that was unjustified.
