Letter to the Editor
Male responsibility
Editor's note: This letter is in response to Tony Demangone's March 13 column. I agree with you that abortion is a terrible thing. However, I think you and too many others are forgetting an important biological fact: A woman does not get pregnant on her own. Even the blessed virgin had help!! Why is it that our society expects a woman to be responsible for her actions, but does not expect the male creature who got her pregnant to be responsible for his actions. (Note: I used the term "male creature" because turning one's back on a pregnant woman does not qualify one as a "man.") Find a way to make sure that both parties have to take equal responsibility, or quit bitching because the woman has decided not to take all of the responsibility herself! Think about the word "sexist" for a few moments. Do you also consider that wrong? Have you ever considered applying that term to yourself? It may be time for you to face it . . . I'm very sure that if more males were responsible, fewer females would get abortions. Do you know of any way to make all the other members of your gender more responsible? May I suggest chastity belts for males? They would be fitted at puberty, the key being kept in the possession of an adult female --preferably the mother --until marriage, then the key is handed over to the bride. Hey, this would mean an end to rape, premarital sex, and extramarital sex too!! Will you wear one? Can you get all of your counterparts to wear one? You want control of a woman's body -- can we have control of yours?!
