Over spring break, the Lady Lion gymnastics team had two things in mind -- scoring high and winning.
It did score high, but didn't always win. No. 8 Penn State (13-8) scored a season-high 194.3 in defeating Kent (188.275) and No. 18 West Virginia (193.6) on March 3 in Morgantown, W.Va., but then lost in Florida and again in Georgia.
Friday night belonged to senior tri-captain Tracy Kerner and junior Bridget Foley, the most consistent Lady Lion gymnasts.
Kerner posted impressive scores on the balance beam (9.65), placed third on the uneven bars (9.75) and third on the floor exercise (9.8).
Foley placed first on bars (9.825) and floor (9.875) and also scored high on beam (9.7).
Freshman Heather Bundy scored a career high on vault (9.725) and sophomore Bea Selz struggled on the floor (9.35) in her first appearance of the season, coming back from an ankle injury.
On March 6, the Lady Lions scored high once again (194.225), but Florida scored higher (195.25).
Kerner was solid once again, scoring a career high on beam (9.9), tying a career high on bars (9.9) -- tying both of Penn State's all-time records -- and placing second on the team on floor (9.725).
Last night, the Lady Lions were in Georgia to take a handful of top schools. The Bulldogs came away with the victory (197.625), followed closely by UCLA (196.475), Nebraska (193.25), California (191.825), Penn State (191.55) and Massachusetts (190.525).
The bars were not friendly to the Lady Lions. Low scores were put up by Foley (8.1), junior Michelle Manzolillo (8.775) and Knox (9.35).
The floor was the most detrimental event to the Lady Lions. Poor performances by Selz (9.0) and Slattery (9.05) gave the Lady Lions a floor score of 47.275, the lowest floor score of the meet.
