The men's golf team started its spring tournament schedule in strong fashion at the William and Mary Kingsmill Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., on March 6-7.
The Lions posted a team score of 609 and tied Temple for third place. The leading scorer for Penn State was junior Adam Decker, who finished second with a score of 149. Junior Dirk Ayers placed ninth in the tournament (151).
After the first 18 holes, the Lions only trailed Marshall, 306-295. Ayers, freshman Tyson Webber and Decker all shot a 76 for the round. Junior Jeff Diehl and sophomore Byron Clift each fired a 78.
Penn State shot a 303 in the next 18 holes and dropped to third. Decker led the Lions with a 73 while Ayers shot a 75. Clift fired a 77 while Diehl and Webber both shot a 78.
The Lions finished up competition at the Fripp Island/Ben Hogan Intercollegiate in South Carolina, which ended late last night. Penn State ended up tied with Indianapolis in 10th place with a 921 overall score.
After the first round, the Lions were tied for 18th place with Temple. Decker and Ayers both shot a team-low 75. In the second round, Decker led the team with a score of 75 while Ayers fired a 76.
Clift led the squad with a third-round score of 71, while Decker added another 75 and Diehl posted a 77. Ayers and J.D. Ostrow both shot an 80.
