Six members of the men's swimming team will compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Invitational today through Saturday at Buffalo. This tournament serves as a consolation meet for four of the swimmers, who were not selected to go to the Big Ten championships last weekend at Minnesota.
Representing the Lions are sophomore Scott Landmann, junior Joe Caraher and freshmen Chris Glenn and Matt Whipple. Also swimming for the team will be sophomores Alex Cunha and George Reimer.
Both Cunha and Reimer participated in Big Tens. Cunha placed 10th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 200 butterfly. He was disqualified in the 400 IM, an event he would have placed in, for an illegal breastroke turn. His 400 medley relay team, which also included sophomore Brian Palme and freshmen David Boardman and Greg Stacey, took eighth.
Reimer also fared well in the championships. He broke his own school record in the 1,650 free with a time of 15:25.43. He was also a member of the ninth-place 400 free relay team and the 10th-place 800 free relay team.
Swimming Coach Peter Brown said the ECACs will allow Cunha and Reimer to improve their times, and hopefully qualify for NCAAs.
"(This championship) requires persistence to make it worthwhile for the people who already competed in Big Tens," he said. "As for the swimmers who didn't go to Minnesota with us, they are just chopping at the bit to see how they do."
The swimmers who qualify for NCAAs will be announced during the week of March 12.
Brown said his swimmers' times will be close to the qualifying times.
"Whether they qualify or not is contingent upon what everybody else does," he said.
