Academic racists

The academic racists continue to come out of the woodwork, and in particular, the ideas recently purported by Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein, co-authors of the Bell Curve, are surfacing. Most recently, the president of Rutgers University of New Jersey was caught making a racist statement based on the genetic determinist line of the Bell Curve. During a speech given last fall to faculty senate, his exact words were, "The average SAT score for African Americans is 750. Do we set standards in the future so that we don't admit anybody with the national test? Or do we deal with a disadvantaged population that doesn't have the genetic, hereditary background to have a higher average?" (New York Times) It seems to be more than just an unfortunate "jumbling of words.' Interestingly, President Lawrence claims the "slip" was the result of reading and talking about the Bell Curve, which he claims he disagrees with for "moral" reasons. Lawrence only apologized for his comment months after he made it and the Rutgers University propaganda mill has been trying hard to make Lawrence out to be an anti-racist. But the real fact is that the enrollment of black students at Rutgers has only gone from 9.7 percent to 9.9 percent, a diminutive increase and not reflective of black population (more than 20 percent) of New Jersey. Murray and Herrnstein's racist claims have been consistently smashed by scientists and many other portions of the population and in fact are nothing more than pseudo-science. Yet we see the book hyped up by the corporate-owned media and sold in bookstores, including Barnes & Noble on campus, for profit and to mold and reinforce racist public opinion. Murray and Herrnstein, along with a host of other academic racists, are hired by the ruling class to influence governmental policy. They would like to solve the unresolvable contradictions inherent in an economic system based on their greed and the exploitation of all workers by punishing the people most oppressed -- the workers themselves. Murray and Herrnstein come to the conclusion that poor black and Latino workers, especially, are genetically incapable of being as smart as rich, white capitalists. There is no anthropological proof for "race" and it is widely known among scientists and other persons that "race" is a socially constructed concept, in no way is it a scientific fact. Anyone who pushes the idea of "race" and racism through academic efforts has a sharp political agenda. We must fight academic racism on all fronts. On paper, "There is no place for racism at PSU." In reality, it is as welcomed here as it is any place in the United States. Barnes & Noble, who made a deal with Penn State and now runs the bookstore, gains profit from the most vile, disgusting and evil type of pseudo-science that we are confronted with. The German Nazis used the same arguments as Murray and Herrnstein and we have proof of what the consequences of policies based on disgusting bio-determinist, racist lies can do. We will not be divided anymore and led by fascists who perpetuate the false concept of "race." It is inspiring that so many students would fight so hard against a university administrator putting forth the Bell Curve line. When over 500 students demonstrated against Lawrence, putting forth other anti-racist and anti-classist demands such as lowering tuition and increasing minority enrollment he immediately apologized and tried to divert attention away from his racist ideas and the Rutgers security forces tried to disrupt the students' efforts. The demonstrations there were not just black and Latino students, but were a unified working-class struggle against racism and for equality. March 30 has been designated by anti-racist students in the Progressive Labor Party as a national day to demonstrate against academic racism and the Bell Curve. We would like to build a unified movement at Penn State to demonstrate on March 30 in opposition to the selling of the Bell Curve at the Penn State Bookstore, owned by Barnes & Nobles. Please join in our efforts.
