Letter to the Editor
Paterno's excellence
My attendance at the PSU-Iowa basketball game and the presentation of the Big Ten Trophy prompted me to write this letter. First let me define myself: 1) parent of a PSU sophomore 2) a teacher coach for 28 years in central Ohio 3) a graduate of Ohio State University (1968). I have some advice for PSU students and football fans -- immerse yourselves in the joy and excellence that Coach Paterno's program exemplifies. As an Ohio State University student and fan during the term of Coach Woody Hayes I feel I am qualified to offer this advice. It was only after Coach Hayes left that many fans realized the greatness of the situation. Coach Paterno, like Coaches Hayes, John Wooden, and Bud Wilkinson, is not only a great coach, but a great teacher. From people like Coach Paterno we can learn many life-long lessons, from the handling of extreme joy to dealing with disappointing failure. In a few years (we hope many) Coach Paterno will retire, until that time enjoy the greatness with which we are presented.
