Members of the Undergraduate Student Government Academic Assembly held elections last night in which three positions were filled.
Emily Bahn, the new president, said she feels the assembly needs to have clearly stated goals that concentrate more on the purpose of the assembly as stated in the bylaws -- to assist, to inform and to represent students.
Bahn (junior-marketing) said she wants to structure committees around academic issues and see people become more active and more involved.
"A lot of what we do is interrelated," Bahn said of her hope to encourage others to affect the assembly's programs.
Bahn ran against Justin Sobota, who then successfully ran for vice-president. Bahn was elected president because of her experience with the assembly and her knowledge about the University, members said while voting.
Sobota (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) ran against Jennifer Scully (junior-labor and industrial relations). He was elected because of his enthusiasm and the hope that he will gain leadership qualities to help him become an experienced president in the future, members said.
He said he wants to concentrate on getting younger University students who are interested in student government more involved with the assembly. These students could act as an advisory board, work with the course selector and help out with extra work, Sobota said.
Steve Achenbach ran unopposed for course selector. The course selector is responsible for compiling surveys and soliciting professors' comments on the best general education classes at the University.
Achenbach (junior-chemical engineering) said the current course selection guide needs to be expanded.
"It's not a good idea of courses and what they're like."
