The Nittany Lion baseball team, one of the nation's top defensive squads a year ago, committed seven errors yesterday, leading to six unearned Old Dominion runs and a 7-4 defeat. The loss completed a weekend sweep for the Monarchs (8-1) and marked the second straight winless weekend for the Nittany Lions (0-6).
"I don't know," Lion Assistant Coach Dave Hursch said, trying to explain the team's lapse of leather. "We had seven errors, and they were all spread out. Three of four infielders had errors."
The previous day, the Lion defenders didn't have the opportunity to make many errors. They could only watch as Penn State pitchers handed 15 bases-on-balls in the 14 innings of a doubleheader. Old Dominion took game one of the twin bill, 6-3, and game two, 11-4.
Besides walks, the Lions were victimized by the offensive explosion and pitching of Old Dominion's Maika Symmonds, a Bellefonte native. In game two of Saturday's doubleheader, Symmonds was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, home run and three RBI's.
He then hurt the Lions with his arm as the winning pitcher in yesterday's game, allowing just two runs in seven innings ptiched.
Despite the weekend sweep and slow start to the season, Hursch said the Lions are having no problem with morale.
"We're still upbeat," he said.
