Sluggers searching for first win

Baseball

The Nittany Lions (0-3) travel to Norfolk, Va., this weekend for a three-game series against Old Dominion (4-1). The teams will square off in a 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow and a single game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. For Penn State, the games are the fourth, fifth and sixth in an 18-game season-opening road trip.

Key stats: Richmond had 30 runners touch home plate last weekend as the Spiders swept a three-game set from the Lions. The main reason for the offensive onslaught was the 18 walks Penn State hurlers surrendered in the three games. Penn State also struggled at the plate, hitting just .250 over the weekend.

Injuries: Penn State pitcher Justin Craig is seeing a doctor today because of an elbow injury. His status for the rest of the season is unknown, as he continues to recover from surgery last fall. Pitcher Matt Weimer may not be able to start because of a hamstring injury.

Preview: The Lions took one game in their series against the Monarchs last season -- a pretty significant accomplishment considering the lofty history of the Old Dominion program.

The Monarchs, under first-year Coach Tony Guzzo, are led by strong pitching and the power of outfielder Kevin Gibbs, who is hitting .350 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. His offense has proved more than enough, as the Monarch arms have compiled just a 3.60 team ERA, allowing just 16 earned runs in 40 innings.

Coach Joe Hindelang says: "Old Dominion, year in and year out, is one of the premier teams in the country. They're usually one of the top 25 teams in the country. We've had real nice success playing there. It's a wonderful place to play, a wonderful stadium."

Women's Tennis

The top Lady Lion tennis players will travel to Princeton this weekend to participate in the Princeton Invitational. They will compete with 16 other Eastern schools, including Brown and Cornell, at 8 a.m. today through Sunday.

Key stats: The Lady Lions started off their home season with a 6-3 win on Feb. 11 over Temple. The next day they fell to Big Ten-rival Illinois, losing all nine matches in the clash.

Injuries: There are no major injuries to report.

Preview: The top three singles players for the Lady Lions will be sophomore Olga Novikova, junior Tricia Lehman and freshman Kellie Murphy. The doubles team competing will be the No. 1 Penn State team of Novikova and Lehman, and the No. 2 team of Murphy and junior Shannon Etzweiler.

This tournament is one of the last chances for the team to compete against Eastern schools, with the exception of its match with James Madison on March 7. If Penn State plays well, it betters its chance of improving its No. 14 Eastern ranking.

Coach Sue Whiteside says: "Although we've played a couple of matches already, I'm really looking forward to see how they perform (in this tournament). I definitely think we're a tougher team than we were in the fall."
