See the light
In response to the Feb. 21 article on the borough taxing students, the students who live in State College should really be ashamed of the great burden we place on the town. Just think of the crimes we create -- like walking home from a party or the "Crime of the Year," such as yanking down a string of lights on College Avenue. That's true --we do riot frequently and burn buildings. Come on Mr. Davis and Mr. Daubert. Why don't you take those blinders off and look at the big picture? True, 50 percent of your taxes may be from the income taxes of residents. But where do these people work? Most likely their income is University employment or a retail business. Where does the money come from for the University? The students. Who patronizes the retail businesses? The students. If the students and University were not here, you would have nothing but farms two hours from nearest civilization. Your town must really be in rough financial shape if it could afford to purchase four new police cruisers to replace those old '91 models. Who would ever want to drive cars that old? Or how about that new $60,000 dump truck along with a few other new vehicles for town use? Is that about $1 or a $1.50 per person for the dump truck? Maybe the board members should go around town and ask each person they see for $1 or $2 to help pay for the new $60,000 dump truck. Most people would look at you like you're nuts! Especially if you were standing next to that new jeep that has the State College emblem on it. I can see why you feel the need to tap students for more money. By the way, Mr. Davis, it is an intelligent assumption you made that the police budget would be considerably less than $3 million dollars if there were no University. Well, let me explain that with no University, you would not have a town; hence, the name, State College. And how much of that $3 million dollar budget is for new cars and those little decibel meters? On behalf of the students, I would like to apologize for the great burdens we place on this town. Maybe we will take up a collection to pay for a string of those lights. YEAH RIGHT!! The people of this town should be thankful for the students giving them jobs and a clean place to live. Always the students are being condemned when they are the reason this place is what it is. We bring money from all across the country and spend it here. If it weren't for this influx of money, this whole Nittany valley would still be farms as it was in 1855. These are my thoughts to our very ungrateful borough council and to the rest of the town who are too blind to see the light.
