Sexist comment
Recently, I read a quote from Coach Fritz regarding his team's poor performance and their need to win. I was appalled at the reference to wanting to wrestle "Cedar Crest girls" so they could win for a change. As a Penn State alum, and as controller at Cedar Crest College, I am horrified that he could be so "politically incorrect" as to build up his team by tearing down women. I found Coach Fritz's comment to be a sexist and demeaning attempt to soothe his own ego. Team sports are supposed to help the members learn about competition, team spirit, and how to be a "good sport," whether they win or lose. I don't believe his comment achieves those objectives, but instead encourages men to physically dominate women in order to "feel good" about winning (certainly not what he intended, I hope). It is offhanded comments like this that help misguided people feel justified in their "macho" feelings about women, and keeps us from maturing as a society. I only hope that if he receives enough complaints about his attitude, it may help him to become more sensitive to the feelings of others, and the true meaning of good sportsman-like conduct.
