Collins working out throwing hitch

Some NFL scouts and coaches have noticed a hitch in former Lion quarterback Kerry Collins' delivery. He did not work out at last weekend's NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The combine gave scouts and coaches a chance to evaluate college players who are eligible for the draft.

This hitch adds a second or two to Collins' passes. It may also reduce his chances of playing in the NFL, said Rick Reiprish, director of college scouting for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, Reiprish said he sees nothing wrong with Collins' technique.

Bruce Lemmerman, director of college scouting for the New Orleans Saints, said "his delivery is a whipping motion, kind of like a baseball pitcher.

"It's not a big problem -- the opinion of one scout or coach is not the opinion of everyone in the NFL," he said.

Collins, who was projected by draft experts to be drafted in the top five in April's NFL draft, is currently trying to fix the hitch, Reiprish said. Collins was unavailable for comment.

"Whether he changes it or not is up to him," Lemmerman said. "There is more to playing quarterback then having a perfect delivery. Kerry's intelligent, accurate, reads well and moves the offense."

Collins holds the second highest passing rating in college history (172.9).

Tight end Kyle Brady, running back Ki-Jana Carter, center Bucky Greeley and linebackers Phil Yeboah-Kodie and Willie Smith joined Collins at the combines.

"All the players did a nice job," Lemmerman said. "The guys came prepared. They were not only prepared as players but as individuals. They represented Penn State's program quite well -- I was impressed."
