Mass appeal
In response to David Schneiderman's article on "Monsters take over Rec Hall," Mr. Schneiderman is just like the masses out there that wants their art spoon fed! Just because the Dave Matthews Band is the group to see for anyone who is cool and on the bandwagon does not make it art. With all due respect to Dave Matthews, they must be pretty good to be co-headlining a tour with Big Head Tood and the Monsters. BHTM are one of the bands that do not get the radio play they deserve. Radio play and mass appeal do not determine an artist's true power. BHTM in their repertoire are not the potential one-hit wonders that other bands are like. They are not Seattle/grunge and the like that are strung out by MTV that spoon-feed their form of art to you without saying what other bands are out there. Radio play, mass appeal vs. integrity, the debate will never be settled. Mr. Schneiderman's article lacked the true unbiased report of an arts writer. His article bashed BHTM and not one ounce of praise was given to them. His sayings about BHTM proved to me that there is no longer people out there who really appreciate good music that isn't on the radio. "...lost what small spark of magic that they were carrying... (After) pulling their last fan favorite, 'Broken Hearted Savior,' out of the bag, the band turned to classic rock-meisters Led Zeppelin by borrowing 'Tangerine' to once again rouse the mellowed crowd. But this was not enough to salvage their set." This goes out to the masses, you know who you are. You are the ones that jump on the bandwagon when a group comes out that appeals to you and you alone. You put on blinders and wouldn't know what real art was if it hit you in the face. Remember Blues Traveler, another very similar band to Dave Matthews, and we all know where they are now. BHTM is a group that no one can parallel in music today. It is not NirvanaPearlJamAliceinChainsSoundgarden. They are distinct and have the respect from me because they can finance the costs of producing their own album whereby they recorded in every possible situation from basements, living rooms to the Boulder Theater. The album Midnight Radio proves to me and to themselves that are truly talented. Four albums out and since they do not get radio play they must not be that good. It is time to stand up for those bands that do not get the respect from you sheep out there that are herded along by the media to make your decisions for you. You people need to think for yourselves and appreciate an excellent band when you see one, ie. Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Every one of the songs that BHTM did was awesome. I've never seen so many people standing around or rather sitting on their butts waiting for some band that will likely disappear into the corporate mainstream thus losing their reason for getting into music in the first place, which is integrity and doing what you love, which is what Big Head Todd and the Monsters do every time they play.
