Trackmen sweep meet

Collegian Sports Writer

The men's indoor track team used its depth and the strong running of sophomore Damon Reed to cruise to a convincing win in a five-team meet at Cornell on Saturday.

Reed won the 55- and 200-meter runs, finished third in the 55-meter hurdles and anchored Penn State's first-place 4x400 relay team. The Lions, who compiled 129 points, defeated host Cornell (69) and Canadian teams Toronto (37), York (33) and Waterloo (16).

While Penn State Coach Harry Groves said he was pleased with the overall effort of the team, he was especially impressed with Reed.

"This particular meet was a good effort," Groves said. "The highlight was Damon Reed. He definitely added to our score."

Reed said he was happy with his performance, but emphasized the team effort that brought the win.

"I had good times, but there were a lot of good times," Reed said. "I don't think you can put me up top as the highlight."

Groves said the Lions were able to dominate the meet because they had more depth than the other teams.

"We had so much depth," Groves said. "We had a lot of winners. That's what wins meets like this."

Penn State's depth showed throughout the meet, with many Lions scoring in several events. Steve Oliver (15:10.1), Kyle Bernhardy (15:11.3) and Jamie Simmonds (15:22.0) took the top three spots in the 5,000 meters. Penn State also dominated the shot put, with Vin Stewart (54-11), Brian Milne (51-11) and Rob Austin (46-1) claiming the top three positions.

"The shot was good," Groves said. "We took the top three spots and that was worth 10 points. That's what we were trying to do -- rack up a lot of points."

Reed said he hoped the meet would serve as a springboard into the Big Ten Championships.

"I thought it was a pretty good meet to get me off and going for the Big Tens" he said. "Now, I want to sit back and relax a little bit before the Big Tens."
