Hoops discrimination
I am the starting point guard for Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School girls' basketball team in Plymouth Meeting, Pa, where I am a sophomore. My brother is a sophomore at Penn State, and I receive The Weekly Collegian in the mail. It was in the Feb. 1 Collegian that I read Ann Tatko's article, "Do critics even watch women's hoops?" and I agree with every word of it. My team experiences are everything you talked about. On game days, our gym is nearly empty. When the boys have a game, the gym is filled. Every boys' game is broadcast on our school's television station, but we're lucky if we get coverage once or twice. Our games are just as exciting as the boys' games. Last year we were league champs. We do everything the boys do. We dive for balls, block shots, shoot threes, dribble between our legs and behind our backs, yet it doesn't make a difference. We are just as physical and aggressive as the boys. I once broke my collarbone by crashing into a wall after diving for a ball. I recently was injured in a game while driving into the lane and received 32 stitches in my head and got a concussion. As a result, I'm particularly sympathetic to Katina Mack. It seems to me that those who mock girls' basketball just haven't given it a chance. That's too bad -- they have no idea what they're missing!
