Students at the Wilkes-Barre Campus were evacuated from the science building when a minor fire was discovered on the roof at 11:18 A.M. Friday.
Andy Teitelbaum, a security guard at the campus, discovered the fire and pulled the alarm at 11:20 a.m. After evacuating the building, students were told to move to the other side of campus.
Students, as well as some professors, thought the alarm was just a fire drill.
Kim Kowalik (freshman-political science) said she was in the basement of the building in a statistics class when the fire started.
"We thought it was a drill," Kowalik said, "then the professor came back in and said, 'apparently the building is on fire.' "
Frank Simko (freshman-English) was sitting in his math class when the fire was discovered. He said his professor also thought the alarm was a fire drill or a prank, but after a few minutes the professor told students to leave the building.
Richel Perretti, Student Government Association vice president at the Wilkes-Barre Campus, said she could see smoke from the outside of the building.
The fire was later discovered to have started on the roof in a ventilation system when a fan motor overheated above the restrooms. The dark black smoke visible on the roof was the result of the fire melting tar surrounding the fan.
The volunteer fire department was called and responded quickly.
"Within 10 minutes from the time the fire started I heard fire trucks," said Heather Jones, editor in chief of the Wilkes-Barre Collegian.
Two maintenance people worked with Teitelbaum to help extinguish the fire. Teitelbaum was treated for smoke inhalation. No one was seriously injured in the fire, but some classes were canceled, while others were simply relocated to other buildings on campus.
The Wilkes-Barre Collegian Editor in Chief Heather Jones contributed to this report.
